Girls High School (second) opens.

1854

Originally Girls High and Normal School, it is located in the former Boston Normal School on Mason Street. The first permanent public high school for girls in the U.S., it expands into an adjacent building in 1861, moves to West Newton Street in 1870,* and becomes a separate school in 1872. It moves to Greenville Street in 1954,* and becomes coeducational and is renamed Roxbury High School in 1972.
